Koalas and Roads
Koalas are most active between dusk to dawn but can cross roads at any time.
The risk increases in breeding season (July to December) when they are far more active.
IF YOU HIT A KOALA or find an injured or dead Koala
STOP…CHECK…CALL
- Pull over safely as soon as possible and put hazard lights on to alert other road users.
- If alive and on the road and it is safe to do so, move the koala off the road using a thick towel or blanket to avoid injury from teeth and claws.
- Call wildlife rescue immediately.
- If possible, wait with the koala until a rescuer arrives.
- If you cannot stay, provide rescuer with exact location; leave a bright marker so koala can be found quickly.
- If dead and on the road and it is safe to do so, move the koala to the side of the road, check pouch (if there is a joey in the pouch, DO NOT REMOVE IT). Call a rescuer who will attend to do further checks and gather vital data.
