About Gympie Koalas

Koalas occur in patchy distribution across the Gympie Region, from Cooloola National Park in the east, across to Goomeri and Tansey in the west, and south down through the Mary Valley.

Significant data has been gathered on the distribution, health and persistence of the region’s koala populations thanks to citizen-science (the public reporting sightings) and through scientific surveys using drones and detection dogs.

Refer to the ‘Wildwatch Gympie’ Koala Dashboard (Gympie Regional Council) to see a map of koala sightings in Gympie region.

Koalas of the Gympie Region Story Map

Created by us at Koala Action Gympie Region (KAGR), this interactive Story Map brings together 10 years of local koala conservation learnings, alongside community koala sightings recorded through Gympie Regional Council’s ‘Wildwatch Gympie’ platform since 2019.

It is a living snapshot of where koalas remain in our region, the habitat they rely on, the threats they face, and the powerful, community-driven work happening to protect them. Built by locals, for locals – and there’s nothing else like it for the Gympie Region.

This project was proudly supported by the Australian Government’s Saving Koalas

Fund as part of our broader on-the-ground work, including drone surveys and habitat restoration.

Educational Signs

Our koala educational signs are found in parks and public areas in five different koala hotspots in the Gympie Region.

There is SO much great information available to learn all about this wonderful, iconic species, the koala. The more we understand about them, the better we can help them.
