MAY

3 May – Wild Koala Day

Organisers of International Wild Koala Day call on everyone, on this day each year, to wear a gum leaf to show our leaders you care about koalas.
Other ways you can help koalas on Wild Koala Day:

  • get out and about and try koala spotting for the day;
  • if you find a koala record it using the council Wildwatch web app; WILDWATCH LINK
  • share a picture of a wild koala on social media,
  • tag #wildkoaladay

24 May – Tree Planting + Celebration

This event celebrates 10 years of KAGR and National Volunteer Week with the planting of 200 koala food trees. Volunteers take part in a guided tour of the Jones Hill property, showcasing its transformation from cleared paddock to thriving koala habitat, and enjoy morning tea provided by local catering.

JULY

12 July – Mary River Festival

KAGR always has a stall at this annual event held at Kandanga, a high density koala habitat. We welcome input from locals and anyone who cares about the Mary River and its catchment about their experiences with wild koalas.  An awesome event at which we all celebrate the beauty of our natural environment surrounding the Mary River.

AUGUST

2-3 August – Off Grid Expo

The Off Grid Lifestyle Expo returns to the Gympie Showgrounds showcasing sustainable living ideas and emerging technologies for off-grid lifestyles. We’ll be there with a stall, sharing our koala conservation work and connecting with the community. Come and say hello!

23 August – Bee Open Day

The Bee Open Day, hosted by Valley Bees, takes place at Mary Valley College in Imbil. This event celebrates all bees, including honey bees, native stingless bees, and native solitary bees. Attendees can look forward to hive displays, workshops, guest speakers, and bee-related products for sale. We’ll be there with a stall, sharing our koala conservation work and connecting with the community.

Koala Education and Awareness Sessions

From time to time we hold education and awareness sessions. These may be at our public plantings or a separate event held at a public venue. We also give talks to children at schools from time to time.  We encourage members of the public to attend and learn about koalas and their habitat.

Community Planting for Koalas. Fantastic days are had by all learning about bush regeneration. Community volunteers plant trees to provide safe harbour for koalas and other wildlife. Volunteers learn about koalas, their favourite food trees and habitat trees, methods of planting these trees and how to maintain them.  Scrumptious morning tea provided.

Koala information mornings. These are community gatherings to learn how koalas live in the wild, the main threats to them, how to become a koala watcher, recognise signs of disease and injury and how to create wildlife corridors. Yummy koality morning tea provided by KAGR.

Our koala education stall at the Jones Hill School Spring Fair. Enthusiastic groups of students came through to hear everything about koalas and how we can help and care for them. Koala poo (scat) and the ‘sound’ a koala makes were especially popular. The koala is the school’s emblem and koalas are still often seen at the school.  We regularly visit local schools to talk to students about all things koala.
